Proposing the National Assembly to have the resolution to amend the visa policy from May 2023

The Ministry of Public Security is expected to propose to the National Assembly to include changes in visa and e-visa policies in a joint resolution of the National Assembly at the nearest session (May 2023). This is the basis for the Government to direct the implementation immediately to avoid missing the opportunity to welcome international guests.

[According to Vietnamnet.vn]

At the Conference on Planning to attract international visitors on March 22, 2023, Colonel Dang Tuan Viet - Deputy Director of the Immigration Department (Ministry of Public Security), said that the Ministry of Public Security is rushing to complete the project and amending and supplementing several articles of the Law on entry, exit, transit, and residence of foreigners in Vietnam in 2014.

Since March 14, the Ministry has posted the draft Law on Amendments and Supplements on the portal to collect comments from ministries, businesses, and people.

Colonel Dang Tuan Viet shared that an essential and prominent change in the draft law is the policy of expanding unilateral visa exemption and expanding electronic visas.

Specifically, the Ministry of Public Security proposes to expand the number of countries granted e-visas; from the current 80 countries, it will be extended to a maximum of nations, and the number of restricted countries will be insignificant.

Secondly, increase the time limit for e-visa holders from 30 to 90 days, valid for one time or many times, based on the guest’s needs, ensuring that the guest can enter and exit many times and perform the job business or tour connection.

Third, extend the temporary stay with guests who enjoy unilateral visa exemption from 15 to 30 days and can extend the stay if necessary.

Colonel Dang Tuan Viet said that the Ministry of Public Security needs time to submit a draft Law amending and supplementing several articles of the Law on entry, exit, transit, and residence of foreigners in Vietnam to the National Assembly. Through. This process takes a long time, sometimes until the end of 2023, because it still has to go through appraisal, criticism, with many comments.

To meet actual requirements, the Ministry of Public Security is expected to propose to the National Assembly to include the actual contents related to the e-visa and visa exemption policy in a joint resolution of the National Assembly at the nearest session (session period). Meeting in May 2023). According to Mr. Viet, this is not a provision of the law. Still, the Government needs to direct the implementation immediately, especially taking advantage of the peak time to welcome international tourists during the year.

In addition, in the coming time, the Ministry of Public Security will improve the digital transformation capacity in immigration activities, limiting delays at the border gate.

In particular, with the deployment of automatic control gates at international border gates, foreign visitors who meet the requirements will not have to be interviewed or directly controlled to swipe their passports to open the door.

Before some comments that the attitude of border gate staff was not welcoming, Colonel Dang Tuan Viet emphasized that greeting guests before entering the shift and smiling when welcoming guests has been implemented for many years. He said he would verify the above information.
